The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a nationwide Major Pharmaceuticals brand levothyroxine recall of certain affected strengths. Major Pharmaceuticals voluntarily pulled multiple lots of their levothyroxine sodium tablets, on July 13, 2026, and the FDA issued its classification four days later. The recall covers multiple strengths of the drug. This recall could impact millions of Americans who rely on this brand of thyroid medication every day.
The FDA said the levothyroxine sodium tablets were recalled because they are subpotent, meaning they are not fully effective. Levothyroxine sodium tablets are used to treat thyroid cancer, hypothyroidism and goiter, among other conditions. A weaker dose can allow hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity and trouble concentrating to return.
The FDA enforcement report lists the following affected strengths, lot numbers and expiration dates:
25 mcg: lot N02212, expires July 2026
50 mcg: lot N02200, expires October 2026
75 mcg: lot N02172, expires July 2026
75 mcg: lots N02296 and N02288, expire December 2026
88 mcg: lot N02203, expires September 2026
125 mcg: lot N02266, expires November 2026
150 mcg: lot N02167, expires July 2026
Major Pharmaceuticals packaged and distributed the recalled medication nationwide, and Cardinal Health also distributed some of it. The recalled tablets were packaged in 10-count blister packs, sold individually or in cartons of 10 packs (100 total), the FDA added. Patients taking Major Pharmaceuticals levothyroxine are advised to check their prescription bottles against all listed lot numbers and to speak with their doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to their medication.
