E-Mail Support Groups

ThyCa offers several email discussion lists (a general list and various specialty lists), where people share thyroid cancer information and support via email messages.  Subscribing puts you instantly in touch with many, many people worldwide, all dealing with thyroid cancer.  The lists are free, simple to manage and participate in, and operate through Yahoo! Groups.  You can choose to receive individual email messages or daily digests; a third option is receiving no email at all and visiting the list's website to read and respond to messages through the permanent list archive.

Please note: Our web site and free support services are for education and support. They are not for commercial use. You are welcome to contact ThyCa to learn more about thyroid cancer and to participate in our support groups and events. Please do not use ThyCa's e-mail address links or listservs to send solicitations or marketing messages for businesses or fundraisers.

Medullary Support Groups

There are two groups available to support people dealing with Medullary Thyroid Cancer:

The Medullary Information Exchange Group, where we exchange factual information about MTC. Topics include:

  • Questions & Answers about MTC
  • Updates about new developments in MTC research: papers, conferences, clinical trials, etc.
  • Personal anecdotes, histories or updates pertinent to our experiences with MTC.
  • Announcements from ThyCa

To join to the Medullary Information Exchange Group, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/medullary/join.

The MTC Support Emotional Support Group, where members can get to know each other on a more informal basis and discuss just about anything. Topics include:

  • Messages requesting or offering emotional support
  • "Get to know each other" notes and general chit-chat
  • Personal status updates, even if not related to MTC
  • Discussion and planning of "meddie" social events

To join to the MTCSupport Emotional Support Group, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MTCSupport/join.

Which MTC group should I join?

If you're new to our community, we recommend joining both groups. As you become a "veteran meddie," you may find that you want less frequent emotional support from the MTC Support group but want to stay engaged in the Information Exchange Group so that you can keep up to date on the latest research and treatment news.

Thyca Mental Challenges Support Group Description:
This is a private e-mail group, addressing the emotional issues that some thyroid cancer survivors deal with. These may or may not be related to our thyroid cancer or its treatment. However, they still affect our lives.

Examples include:

  • Day to day coping with life as a cancer survivor: learning to rely on hormone replacement instead of our body's own thyroid hormone, adapting to periodic testing, & other life disruptions.
  • Mental health issues that may accompany a cancer diagnosis; e.g.: depression, fears, panic attacks, & how they affect our lives.
  • Brain fog: inability to think quickly to solve problems, memory loss, & dealing with fatigue that affects our concentration or mood.
  • Returning to work or school: coping with challenges of competition, meeting deadlines, continuing to perform.

This group offers a supportive setting in which to share our experiences and solutions. We aim to lessen feelings of isolation. We help each other build on our strengths and learn how to cope with our life changes since our diagnosis. We give encouragement and offer compassionate support. This group is not a therapy group or a form of professional treatment. We ask participants to seek help from their doctors for their individual medical and mental health needs.

This group is open to anyone who wishes to join. After you join the group, you'll be able to read all the posts from the other group participants. You may send a message if you choose to do so. The group moderators review all messages. This group is dedicated exclusively to supporting members who experience emotional and mental health issues that accompany living with Thyroid Cancer. Posters who have questions or comments about other aspects of thyroid cancer will be directed to an appropriate listserv (e-mail support group). (See www.thyca.org for all ThyCa support listservs). By posting to this email support group, the poster understands and agrees that each email will be reviewed for content and any email may or may not be allowed to be posted in the sole discretion of the moderators.
