Free Mid-Atlantic Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Workshop Near Washington, DC, Will Feature Physician Speakers, a Dentist, and Survivor/Caregiver Roundtables

On Saturday, May 16, 2009, everyone interested in thyroid cancer is invited to the Mid-Atlantic Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Workshop. ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association, Inc., will offer this FREE one-day workshop for thyroid cancer survivors, their families, caregivers, and friends.

This educational and supportive event will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Professional Building at Washington Adventist Hospital, 7600 Carroll Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912, near Washington, DC, and Interstate 495.

This event is free. You may attend part, or all, of the workshop. You may register online at www.thyca.org (form is available on the web site) or onsite at the workshop.

Physicians and a dentist will speak and answer questions about thyroid cancer treatment, long-term monitoring, and research advances. Featured include Kenneth D. Burman, M.D., Endocrinologist, Washington Hospital Center, DC, who also is President of the American Thyroid Association; Nancy Carroll, M.D., Endocrine Surgeon, Washington Hospital Center, DC; Matthew I. Kim, M.D., Endocrinologist, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD; Gigi Meinecke, D.M.D., F.A.G.D., Dentist, University of Maryland School of Dentistry; and Douglas Van Nostrand, M.D., Nuclear Medicine Physician, Washington Hospital Center, DC.

Topics include If You’re New to Papillary or Follicular Thyroid Cancer: After Surgery and During the First Year, Understanding Risk Levels; Controversies in Using I-131, Using I-131 more than once, Selecting I-131 Therapy Doses and the Use of Lemon Candies; Thyroid Surgery Basics, Lymph Node Invasion, Neck Dissection, Surgical Treatment of Neck Spread, Preventing and Solving Voice Issues; A. Dentist’s Perspective: Overview and Introduction to Salivary Issues and Dysfunction; Thyroid Cancer Management, Especially After the First Year: Management for Different Situations, for Persistent or Recurrent Disease;TSH Levels, Bones, Heart, Other Issues.; and Future Trends in Management of Thyroid Cancer for Low-Risk Patients, for High-Risk Patients.
