DRIVING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Driving in the Los Angeles area. The Los Angeles metro area is huge: Distances seen on a map can be difficult to interpret in terms of driving time. Traffic is usually heavy and is at its heaviest on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It can, however, be heavy at any time. Weekend traffic is usually somewhat lighter. We will add further tips to this site. The subway and the bus can be useful if they go directly to your intended destination. Happily, taking the bus from the hotel area to Venice, Downtown Culver City or Santa Monica is fairly easy as there are direct bus lines to these nearby places. Driving your own car, renting a car, and hiring a taxi are generally the easiest ways to get around if you go farther afield. Depending on your destination, parking may be scarce and is sometimes expensive. Downtown Culver City, Venice Beach, the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, and Hollywood are best explored by foot, as each has a high concentration of shops and restaurants in a fairly small area. Walking or biking around other parts of the city is not practical as distances are long. Local Bus System Online Maps & Guides There are three main, interconnecting bus systems that serve the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) area: LA Metro, Culver City Bus and Santa Monica Big Blue Bus. Online links to these three systems follow: |
